As some of you may know, my step-mom was in the hospital. She checked into Kaiser Hospital, where she was also an employee, on July 4th after unsuccessfully getting in to see her doctor on July 3rd. She went into the emergency room with pnuemonia-like symtoms and quickly declined. She was placed in a medically induced coma on the 6th and emerged from it on the 13th of July. She was sitting up in bed and gesturing to everyone. She slipped back into a coma within the next day or so. the doctors were unable to find out what was wrong with her and she continued to decline.
The doctors had told us that even if a miracle were to happen and they were able to find out what was wrong with her, she wouldn't be the Karen we knew and loved and the family knew Karen wouldn't want to be here if she weren't 'herself' anymore.
The family, which included her parents, my dad, her two boys, my wife and three boys, her sister-in-law,and one of her son's girl-friends, made the unanimous decision to remove her from her ventaltor in a meeting at 2:30 on July 22. She was given morphine to make her comfortable and at 5:42pm they removed her form life-support. We were told she would pass within an hour of this. Stubborn until the very end, she passed at about midnight, six hours and 18 minutes of spunk and fight left in her.
While we were at the hospital, she had so many visitors from different departments around the hospital. She touched a great number of lives and was deeply loved by all who knew her.
She will be missed...
